Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by bacteria that are spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, or the spine. In most cases, TB is treatable and curable; however, persons with TB can die if they do not get proper treatment. In CDC's Strategic Plan for the Elimination of Tuberculosis in the United States, ACET defined elimination as achieving an incidence rate of reported cases of fewer than 1 per million (i.e., a fold reduction from the U.S. case rate).

Thus, case-finding and treatment programs have both clinical and public health benefits (19). Identifying and treating persons with noncontagious TB (such as extrapulmonary disease, primary pulmonary disease in children, bacteriologically unconfirmed pulmonary disease, and tuberculous infection) can prevent infectious cases (20).   Following a mean years of follow-up, 13 cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis developed in the vaccine group and 26 in the placebo group.
